What we do...
Mechling-Shakley Veterans Center is dedicated to the care and support of those who have served who now find themselves in need. That is the foundation of the mission begun in 1987, to provide a community-based residential treatment facility for homeless veterans. Named in honor of two Vietnam veterans who were killed in action, we are reminded daily of the sacrifice that these veterans have made and remain diligent in our duty to care for them and to restore them to the lives of meaning they so greatly deserve. Fifteen years ago, a resident wrote this message on the whiteboard near the dining room:
That message has never been and never will be erased – that is our calling, that is our mission.
Our Services

Housing
Our first objective is to give homeless veterans a safe place they can call home. Here they will find a sober environment, three healthy meals every day, free clothing and assistance with medical care and transportation needs.

Counseling
One of the most important aspects of our center is the opportunity to help our residents come to terms with the various challenges they have been facing since leaving active service such as PTSD, addiction, family struggles, and finances.

Benefits Assistance
While there are many government programs and benefits available for veterans, they are not always easy to access. Our years of experience enable us to help our residents through the process of qualifying for all the benefits they are due.
